Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media products and why?

Due to my film being independent and abstract, I would have a smaller company to distribute my video to specific audiences. Film Four often distributes low to medium budget British films, and I think they would be perfect for distributing ‘Wilderness’. Distributing films such as ‘Chat room’ and ‘This is England’, my film would be perfect for their criteria and the target audience they have. Film Four would be the more realistic distribution company to pick in comparison to companies such as Studio Canal, who distribute a wider variety of films that are often big hits in the box office, such as Terminator 2 and The Tourist. Studio Canal would not be a good distribution option for ‘Wilderness’ because of the target audience that they aim for. Films that are popular in the box office are mainly high budget action adventures, horrors or comedies. This does not fit with ‘Wilderness’s’ target audience, who are a niche group that watch abstract Thriller movies.

Because ‘Wilderness’ would not be a very mainstream film, I feel that large cinema complexes such as Odeon and Vue wouldn’t have shown my film on release due to the obscurity of it. Rather than this, I could see it being shown to a more art-house audience in a smaller cinema such as Cinema City in Norwich. The reason for this is that Cinema City shows a wide range art-house films, like Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, and The Water Diviner. This is used to please a much smaller audience that do not find Hollywood blockbusters to be entertaining. Digital technology would be another major option for distributing my film. Sites like YouTube and Netflix would be a good choice for ‘Wilderness’, so that I could be able to distribute the film around the world easily, making the target audience even larger. Due to being a student film maker, I would be able to send my film to competitions or events that happen locally, such as BBC Voices, who help hold the Norwich film festival. This would get my media product out there to the locals and possibly create attraction from other Towns and Cities.
